+ The Holy Epistle (2 Corinthians 4:6-15) +

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us.  We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.  For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.  So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.  For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people, it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

+ The Holy Gospel (St. Luke 5:1-11) +

At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.  And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.  Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, Jesus asked him to put out a little from the land.  And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.  And when Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."  And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing!  But at your word I will let down the nets."  And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.  And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord."  For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men."  And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

v    Meditation: “Only God gives Financial Security!”

(By: Purpose Driven Connection)

But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today. (Deuteronomy 8:18)

God is the One who provides for us when we have a need. This means He supplies for our financial needs. In other words, I don’t look to an employer for my security. I don’t look to my savings for security. I don’t look to anyone or anything other than God to supply my needs. Let me illustrate it this way: When I turn on the water, I don't think the water actually comes straight from the faucet. I know the water really comes from a reservoir. It just comes to me through the faucet. In the same way, the income that God wants to give you may come through a job or through something else. But the source is always God. This means you don’t need to worry about which faucet He uses to supply your needs. In a sense, He says, “If I turn off one faucet, I can just as easily turn on another. If you lose one job, I can give you another. I am your source, not your job. I am your source, not your bank account.”

v    Meditation: “Does Jesus set your Priorities?”

(By: Purpose Driven Connection)

Someone else said, “I will follow you, sir; but first let me go and say good-bye to my family.” Jesus said to him, “Anyone who starts to plow and then keeps looking back is of no use for the Kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:61-62)

Discipleship is not like a career we map out for ourselves: “I’ll do this for Jesus after I get the kids through school and build my retirement fund.” We cannot arrange our service to suit ourselves; otherwise, we end up serving Jesus according to what makes sense to us. Like the disciple in today’s verse, we say we will obediently follow Jesus, but then we turn the tables and decide on our own what should take priority in our lives. This still leaves us in control. We may accomplish good things, but that doesn’t make us disciples of Jesus. Jesus says, “Anyone who starts to plow and then keeps looking back is of no use for the Kingdom of God” (Luke 9:61-62). Looking back is double-mindedness (James 1:8, 4:8). It makes us unstable and uncertain, and that’s the exact opposite of the focused following Jesus expects of us. It means there are moments in our relationship with Jesus when we say, “I’ll get back to you on that, Jesus, just as soon as I finish with my priorities.” Are you holding off Jesus until he fits into your schedule? Until you get through this stage of your life? If Jesus brings conviction, that doesn’t equate to condemnation. He wants the best for you, and he knows you will find that when you follow him.

We the faithful praise and worship Thy Cross and Tomb, O Giver of life, for Thou hast chained Hades, O Immortal One, and as the Almighty God, Thou hast raised the dead with Thee and hast shattered the gates of Hades and destroyed the power of death. Therefore, we praise Thee with love; Thou Who didst arise and demolish the power of the deadly enemy. Thou hast raised all who believe in Thee, delivered the world from the arrows of the serpent, and freed us from the errors of the enemy, O almighty One. Therefore, in faith we praise Thy Resurrection by which Thou hast saved us as God of all.

September 1st was the Orthodox Ecclesial New Year, and Fr. Mark made a new year’s resolution on behalf of the parish: “No Negativity Policy”. Remember what our mothers told us when we were young: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all…”, and remember also what our Lord continues to tell us: “Do unto others, what you want done to you…” Let’s practice these Golden Rules and see how our Parish will change for the better! Remind each other! Help each other! Love each other! Stay together!
