+ The Holy Epistle (Galatians
2:16-20) +
Brethren, you know that a man is not justified
by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in
Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of
the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in
Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of
sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I
tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor.
For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no
longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the
flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

+ The Holy Gospel (St. Mark 8:34-38;9:1) +
The Lord said, “If any man would
come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose
it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the
whole world and forfeit his soul? For
what can a man give in return for his soul?
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and
sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in
the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here
who will not taste death before they see the Kingdom of God come with power.”
قالَ
الربُّ مَنْ
أرادَ أن
يتبعَني
فليكفُرْ

ويَحمِلْ

The Cross is the preserver of the entire universe. The Cross is the
comeliness of the Church. The Cross is the might of kings. The Cross is the
steadfastness of believers. The Cross is the glory of the angels and the sting
of Satan. O what a boon granted mankind! Wherefore, O Christ, save our souls;
for Thou alone art compassionate. How strangely wonderful that the Cross which
bore the high the One as a cluster of grapes full of life, appeareth today
elevated from the earth, through which we were all drawn to God, and death was
swallowed unto the end. O what a pure Tree through which we have received the
non-mortifying food of Eden, glorifying Christ. How strangely wonderful that
the Cross appeared equaling heaven in length and breadth, sanctifying all
things with divine grace, through which barbarian nations were conquered, and
the scepters of kings were established! What a divine ladder over which we
ascend to the heavens, raising with praises Christ the Lord.
Synaxarion: Today the Holy Orthodox Church commemorates our Righteous Father
Eumenios the wonder-worker, bishop of Gortyna. He gave himself to Christ with
his whole heart from his youth, freeing himself of the heavy burdens of riches
and of the flesh. Eumenios gave all of his goods and money to the poor and
needy, and fasted strictly. He thus healed himself and others. Passionless and
filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, Eumenius shone with a radiance as it
is written: “A city set on a hill cannot be hid” (Matt. 5:14). As a bishop in
Gortyna, holy Eumenios governed Christ’s flock as a good shepherd. He worked
many miracles by his prayers: he killed a poisonous snake, drove out demons,
healed many of the sick, and brought rain from God in a time of drought.
Eumenios entered into the eternal presence of our Lord in the seventh century. By
his intercessions, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen.
v Feast
of the Universal Exaltation of the Honored and Life-giving Cross (September
14th)
On
this day, we commemorate two events connected with the Precious Cross of
Christ: the finding of the Cross on Golgotha, and the returning of the Cross to
Jerusalem from Persia. While in the Holy Land, the Empress Helena learned that
the Holy Cross was buried underneath the temple of the pagan goddess Venus
built on Golgotha. She demanded it be torn down and the Cross be excavated. The
search turned up three crosses. Uncertain which was the true Cross, the
Patriarch Marcarius ordered that each cross be placed on the corpse in a
funeral procession passing by. The first two produced nothing, but the third
brought the man back to life, thus determining that this was the very Cross on
which our Savior brought life to the world. Later, King Chozroes conquered
Jerusalem, took the people into slavery and carried off the Lord’s Cross to
Persia. In 628, the Greek Emperor Heraclius defeated Chozroes, and brought the
Cross back to Jerusalem with great ceremony. Heraclius was carrying the Cross
on his back when, suddenly, he froze. The Patriarch Zacharias saw an angel
directing the emperor to take off his robes and walk with the same extreme
humility with which our Savior bore His Cross. The emperor complied, and was
able to finish the procession to the Church of the Resurrection on Golgotha,
where he restored the Holy Cross. By the power of Thy Cross, O Lord Jesus
Christ our God, have mercy upon us, and save us. Amen.
Verily, Moses having struck horizontally with his rod, cleaving the Red
Sea and causing Israel to cross on foot, then having struck it transversely
bringing it together over Pharaoh and his chariots, did trace the Cross, thus
symbolizing that invincible weapon. Wherefore, do we praise Christ our God, for
that He hath been glorified. The rod is taken as a symbol of the mystery; for
by its budding, it designateth the Priest. But now the tree of the Cross hath
blossomed forth with might and steadfastness to the hitherto barren Church. When
Jonah in the belly of the whale did stretch forth his hands in the form of a
cross, he did foreshadow clearly the Passion of salvation; and when he came out
on the third day, he did symbolize the world-transcending Resurrection of
Christ, Who was crucified in the flesh, and illuminating the world by His
third-day Resurrection.
Message from Fr. Mark: With much joy I write to you all, expressing my heartfelt thanks to
His Eminence Metropolitan PHILIP for his decision to keep me as your Pastor,
and expressing my thanks to all of you who showed your support to the Church
and your love for me and my family. It is a known fact that our Parishioners
have a strong attachment to St. Nicholas Church, you all support your
Church, and I see your support. However, what I would like to see more of is
YOU! Please help us fill-up our Church with you and your families (children
included!). Please make an effort in your most busy
schedules to come to your Church, your spiritual home, which needs your
presence & support. Please be a part of my life by making the Church a part
of your life! God bless you!
September 1st is the Orthodox
Ecclesial New Year, and I am making a new year’s resolution on your behalf for
this parish: “No Negativity Policy”. Remember what our
mothers told us when we were young: “If you don’t have anything nice to
say, don’t say anything at all…”, and remember also
what our Lord continues to tell us: “Do unto others, what you want done to
you…” Let’s practice these Golden Rules and see how
our Parish will change for the better! Remind
each other! Help each other! Love each other! Stay together!
